As the unusually fine weather has brought young athletes outdoors earlier than usual, parents, trainers, and coaches will be glad to know about the Westchester Orthopaedics Institute’s Sports Injury Hotline.

The hotline operates out of the offices in White Plains and is overseen by Louis McIntyre, M.D., board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine expert. Dr. McIntyre, who is on the medical staff of White Plains Hospital, designed the service to provide an immediate response and diagnostic resources to student-athletes who have suffered a sports-related injury.

Parents, athletic trainers, and coaches from regional high schools and colleges use the service to obtain a free phone consultation with Dr. McIntyre’s colleague, certified athletic trainer Michael Mirabella immediately following an injury and to arrange for any needed testing, physician appointments, or physical therapy as soon as possible.

Many sports injuries commonly occur early in the season, when bones and joints are not fully accustomed to the stress of the particular activity on the body, according to Mr. Mirabella. “The best thing young athletes and parents can do after a sports-related injury is seek help and an expert opinion without delay. The longer the injury goes without attention and rehabilitative treatment, the longer it will take to heal completely,” he said.
